SoCon announces football players of the week presented by GEICO

Furman, Chattanooga and VMI honored

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its SoCon Football Players of the Week presented by GEICO on Monday, for games Oct. 5. Furman tailback Devin Wynn was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Chattanooga linebacker Ty Boeck was named the Defensive Player of the Week. VMI kicker Grant Clemons was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

 

 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Devin Wynn, Furman, Jr., TB, Greensboro, Ga.

Furman tailback Devin Wynn ran for a career-high 217 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries and caught a 61-yard touchdown pass in a 58-14 win at Samford, which moved the Paladins to 3-0 in league play for this first time since 2006. After the Bulldogs scored on their first drive for an early 7-0 lead, Wynn took an option pitch on Furman’s first play from scrimmage and raced 75 yards for his first TD of the day. Later in the quarter, Wynn ran for a career-high 89-yard touchdown, finished the first with 174 rushing yards to match the SoCon record for rushing yards in a quarter. On Furman’s opening drive of the third quarter, the junior from Greensboro, Georgia, hauled in a 61-yard scoring pass to put Furman ahead 49-14. Wynn would depart the contest with just over five minutes to play in the third and finished with 278 all-purpose yards. His rushing total was the ninth-best in school history.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ty Boeck, Chattanooga, So., LB, Soddy Daisy, Tenn.

Chattanooga linebacker Ty Boeck had a team-high 12 tackles and forced two fumbles in the Mocs’ 34-17 win at Mercer. Boeck, who has recorded at least 10 tackles in each of his last three games, had a career-high 2.0 for loss against the Bears. Boeck’s first forced fumble of the day came in the first quarter deep in Mercer territory. The sophomore from Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, recovered the fumble at the Bears’ 7-yard line, setting up Chattanooga’s first score of the day. Boeck forced another fumble in the fourth quarter, which was also recovered by the Mocs in Mercer territory. Boeck’s efforts helped Chattanooga hold the Bears to just 29 yards rushing, their lowest total since restarting the program in 2013, and helped keep Mercer scoreless after the first quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Grant Clemons, Sr., K, Daleville, Va.

VMI kicker Grant Clemons scored 10 points in a 34-21 win over The Citadel, helping the Keydets claim the Silver Shako for the first time since 2002 and snap a 12-game losing streak in the series. Clemons was 4-for-4 on point-after attempts and was 2-for-2 on field-goal tries. His first field goal was a 22-yard strike as time expired in the first half, staking the Keydets to a 17-7 halftime lead. The senior from Daleville, Virginia, connected on a career-best 46-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it a 27-14 game. Clemons also kicked off six times, recording a pair of touchbacks. VMI’s win over The Citadel was its first in Charleston, South Carolina, since 1995.
