The Western Catamounts and Mark Prosser come in hot as they look to continue their win streak after defeating UNCA in a tough match-up that ended 78-77. Xavier and Travis Steele come in after a tough road loss against Wake Forest, 78-80
First Half
Xavier and the Catamounts would have a battle of first half. Xavier would hold the lead for the majority of the half and game but the Catamounts were within striking distance for a majority of the game. Western would have a hard time making it to the rim as blocks from the Xavier squad would keep coming
The half would end close, 29-32, in Xavier’s favor. With the Musketeer’s missing key player Naji Marshall they had difficulty shooting the ball. Mixed together with WCU’s defense hounding them throughout, turnovers and missed opportunities were what followed.
Second Half
The second half would be a different story as Xavier was able to extend the lead in the last half of the period. Shots were landing and Senior Quentin Gooding would have a career high 25 points to win the game for the Musketeer’s, 74-61.
WCU did their best on the defensive end of the ball causing many turnovers and steals. With Sophomore Kameron Gibson doing his best by adding 16 points with redshirt Freshman Faulkner tacking on another 14. While Xavier’s Junior Jason Carter would help his team overcome the Catamounts by adding 16 points and almost getting a double-double with 9 rebounds.
The key element for Xavier’s win tonight would be their dominance at crashing the glass. They outrebounded the Catamounts 40-29, along with key blocks and other players stepping up to replace key scorer Marshall. And the CSN player of the game will go to Senoir Quentin Gooding for his career high performance with 25 points that won the Musketteer’s the game.
The Xavier Musketeers would improve to (10-2) and will go on the road to face TCU on 12/22. While the Western Catamounts 5 game win streak snapped as they fell to (7-3) they will continue their road tour against Tennessee Tech on 12/21.
